VOTER ID: MAJORITY LEADER THUNE IS A “PROBLEM”

Plus: Congressional Slush Fund Buries Sexual and Financial Misconduct

TOP LINE

A purge on Capitol Hill is just beginning…

Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell and Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales resigned abruptly after credible allegations of sexual misconduct.

Much needed transparency about a congressional “Slush Fund” that buries misconduct using taxpayer dollars is apparently around the corner.

In an extended interview, GOP Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna of Florida’s 13th District says she has a subpoena for records that could be public in a matter of days.

Timing matters. In March, the House voted overwhelmingly 357 to 65 to block a resolution that would have immediately named names.

Instead, the matter was referred to the House Ethics Committee, presumably to stall it.  But the dramatic downfall of Swalwell and Gonzales changed the dynamic. On Capitol Hill, where there is smoke, there can be a raging fire.

But first, the interview question that went viral.

Asked why Republicans, who control the House and Senate, have not delivered the SAVE Act which requires proof of US citizenship to register and government ID to vote, Luna was blunt.

“(Senate Majority leader) JohnThune is a problem,” she said. “I do not like what he's done because he has every ability, and really it's him that's blocking voter ID. He has every ability to embrace the standing filibuster or remove the filibuster. Democrats are going to do it anyway.”

NOTE: The filibuster is a parliamentary procedure that prolongs debate and delays or even blocks a vote.  It takes 60 votes to move forward and end debate. The formal Senate procedure is called cloture.

Luna accused Thune and others of being more concerned about protecting the Senate, as an institution, rather than getting the SAVE Act delivered in time for the midterms.    If the balance of power changes in the Senate, many predict the Democrats’ first move will be eliminating the filibuster.

“I think John Thune is doing the wrong thing,” Luna explained.
