As we go to press, Utah’s governor Republican Spencer Cox said to ABC News that Tyler Robinson’s roommate and boyfriend is transitioning from male to female.   

Kirk was shot Wednesday during a line of questioning about mass shootings and how many can be blamed on transgender shooters.

In the interview, Cox also said the roommate and those close to the suspect Tyler Robinson are cooperating with the investigation, but as of this writing, Robinson is not.

To make sense of a fast moving, chaotic breaking news story, it’s good journalism to review the court records.   It’s clear from online debate and unnecessary speculation that most people have not looked at these documents.

The Affidavit of Probable Cause concludes the evidence supports three initial charges: aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury and obstruction of justice.

(NOTE: Initial charges are a placeholder until more evidence is gathered. It is already shaping up to be a death penalty case.)

The court documents reveal evidence of premeditation  Based on surveillance footage, Robinson arrived on the campus of Utah Valley University four hours before the shooting.  Robinson had a lot of time to change his mind.

There is a description of the weapon that was recovered in nearby woods as well as engraved bullet casings which contained anti-fascist and taunting messages.
