There is an expression that Iran has never won a war and it has never lost a negotiation.

In other words, Iran uses negotiations as a stalling tactic to avoid wars which it ultimately cannot win. As long as the sides keep talking, Iran continues to enrich uranium, and move closer to a nuclear weapon.  

Under the Obama Administration, Iran made significant advances in its nuclear program as it negotiated the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA .  

The 2015 agreement between Iran, the US, China, France, Germany, Russia and the UK was designed to restrict Iran’s nuclear program to civilian use in exchange for lifting nuclear-related sanctions.

With hindsight, the JCPOA had no teeth and Iran defied the agreement with no real consequences, until now. 

President Trump said he was exhausted by Iran’s games and lack of good faith negotiations. He saw Iran’s stalling tactics for what they are.  

Like it or not, President Trump is a Commander In Chief who is not afraid to use his power and authority. And this isn’t the first time.
