KHARG ISLAND: Hitting Iran Where It Hurts Most

TOP LINE

Kharg Island is Iran’s main oil hub that sits about 15 miles off the Iranian coast in the Persian Gulf and 250 miles north of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Kharg Island controls about 90% of Iran’s oil exports, and significantly, it is a major supplier for China’s energy needs.

Controlling the future of Kharg Island and the Strait of Hormuz may dramatically shorten the war’s duration.

DEEP DIVE

Overnight Friday, US Central Command confirmed a “large-scale precision strike” on Kharg Island.

According to the US Energy Information Administration, about 20% of the world’s total daily oil consumption travels through the Strait of Hormuz.  Kharg Island is Iran’s primary distribution hub.

CENTCOM said the targets on Kharg island included naval mine storage facilities, missile storage bunkers and other military sites.  The CENTCOM bulletin said 90 Iranian military targets were hit, while preserving Kharg Island’s oil infrastructure.

The U.S. strikes were designed to inflict maximum damage to the island’s military installations and designed to scare the Iranian regime senseless.
