JAN 6 Pipe Bomber: The Untold Story

TOP LINE

I remember exactly where I was.

At 4:45 pm on January 6, 2021, I confirmed that two viable pipe bombs had been discovered at the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic National Committee Headquarters in Washington D.C.  Both offices are a couple of blocks from Capitol Hill.

I immediately called into the CBS News control room, expecting we would get this breaking news on the air.  Instead, I was told that there was no room in the Special Report coverage and it could wait.

What I didn’t know at the time, is that this lack of urgency would be indicative of the delay and disinterested tone that marked the next five years.

Last week, on December 4th, Brian J. Cole Jr., a 30-year old from Woodbridge Virginia was arrested.  He is charged with transporting an explosive device across state lines with the intent to kill, injure, or intimidate and with attempted malicious destruction by means of fire and explosive materials.

DEEP DIVE

Within days of January 6 2021, I obtained a Situational Awareness Bulletin that documented the pipe bomb discovery.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) pipe bomb was recovered in an alley behind the club at 12:45pm.   This is a lightly trafficked area.  The placement of the bomb in a remote corner near a garbage can suggested the pipe bomber had done advance reconnaissance and did not intend to harm large numbers of people.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) pipe bomb was recovered near a bench at 1:15pm. Again, this is a lightly trafficked area and the likelihood of mass casualties was remote.

Unclassified Internal Law Enforcement Report January 7, 2021

While the law enforcement photos of the pipe bombs are grainy, it appears at least one timer may have stopped short of “zero” and, as a consequence, may have failed to detonate for that reason.
