ICE Minneapolis: A Forensic Review
When there is more to the story than meets the eye
TOP LINE
One of the first things an elite federal agent learns is that shooting videos can be deceiving.
The first available video is often misleading. It takes an assessment of multiple videos that provide various angles on the shooting to confirm the facts and the timeline of events.
In this age of real-time information, many news consumers want rapid fire assessments and rapid fire conclusions before all the evidence is in. This sets the conditions for deceptive narratives to take hold and gain traction.
The shooting death of a 37-year-old Minneapolis woman by a veteran Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent is a case in point.
When to believe what you’re seeing and, when there is more to the story than meets the eye.

They spoke to me on background which means they provided information for my reporting but they were not authorized to speak on the record.
The law enforcement contact said a shooting incident is like a jigsaw puzzle. Multiple videos, each presenting an independent angle on the incident, must be pieced together to build the full picture. These videos or pieces of the puzzle are not available at the same time.
Some videos such as law enforcement body camera videos, footage from protestors, bystanders and the media, are available very quickly. Other footage that can help us build the timeline becomes available later.
As one example, three days after the shooting, Homeland Security, which oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement, released the footage above. It shows Renee Good’s Maroon Honda blocking the road for several minutes during the ICE operation.
