Hillary and Bill Clinton: Above The Law

This week, the House Oversight Committee moves ahead on holding the Clintons in criminal contempt of Congress

TOP LINE

Next week, the House Oversight Committee moves ahead with criminal contempt of Congress after the Clintons defied bi-partisan subpoenas for depositions over the Epstein Files.

Technically, what happens next week is called a “Mark Up” to consider two resolutions and associated reports recommending that the former president and secretary of state be found in contempt.

If the Clintons sat for depositions, the line of questioning would likely explore funding sources (Epstein, Epstein associates?) for the Clinton Foundation and Clinton Global Initiative.

Both groups worked extensively with USAID and Non-Governmental Organizations or NGOs. Last year, Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency exposed widespread fraud involving USAID and NGOs.

So, there are legitimate questions here.

The Clintons sent lengthy letters defending their refusal of the Congressional subpoenas.  This is significant given their former, top government positions and professed respect for democratic institutions.

What the Clintons’ seem to forget is that they are not in a position to make decisions about the relevance of their testimony, and apparently on that basis, refuse to sit for congressional depositions.

The Clintons’ position reinforces criticism that the former first couple believe and act like they are “Above the Law.”

The House Oversight Committee is usually deeply divided along partisan lines. However, when it came to subpoenas for the Clintons, there was a rare show of bi-partisanship.

After a previous attempt to depose the Clintons was postponed to accommodate their schedule, last week, the Clintons sent a blistering letter to Chairman Comer with a firm no.

NOTE: The Clintons face criminal contempt which punishes misconduct, whereas civil contempt is designed to coerce an individual into complying with a court order.

In the letter, the Clintons breathlessly claimed they had no additional insights to provide congressional investigators even though they appear in photos with Epstein and Bill Clinton travelled with him.

“We have tried to give you the little information we have. We've done so because Mr. Epstein's crimes were horrific. If the Government didn't do all it could to investigate and prosecute these crimes, for whatever reason, that should be the focus of your work.”

Then the Clintons accused the Republicans of weaponizing the DOJ against them.

“The Justice Department has been used as a weapon, at the direction of the President, to pursue political opponents...Every person has to decide when they have seen or had enough and are ready to fight for this country, its principles and its people, no matter the consequences.

For us, now is that time.”

NOTE: The Clintons’ are using a standard political tactic of accusing your opposition (in this case, the Republican Chairman) of the same behaviors Democrats have used against the GOP.

BACK STORY

I first reported on Hillary Clinton in 2000 when she ran for the New York senate seat.  I was assigned to cover her senate campaign while at Fox News Channel.

I remember being summoned to Roger Ailes’ corner office at the New York City headquarters. Ailes told me, in his brusk way, that there was good news and bad news, and if he was in my position, I should get the good news first.
