Dirty Tricks: Top Russia Gate Spy Is Target of Criminal Probe

It was one of the worst kept secrets in Washington D.C.   

This week, a lawyer for John Brennan confirmed that the former CIA Director is the target of a Florida grand jury for his role in the 2017 Trump/Russia Collusion scandal.

Brennan faces potentially wide-ranging charges, among them, that he lied to Congress about his reliance on the unverified Steele Dossier which was opposition research paid for by Hillary Clinton’s campaign. 

The 2017 Intelligence Report titled “Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent US Elections” was released by the Director of National Intelligence, the top’s top intelligence official. 

It was a pivotal report because it assessed the Russian President “aspired” to help and “developed a clear preference” for then-Candidate Trump. 

Made public in January 2017 as President Trump began his first term, the report cemented the public narrative that Trump was a puppet of Vladimir Putin.

The 17-page letter from Brennan’s lawyer lays the foundation for a selective prosecution defense and to portray the former CIA Director as a victim of government overreach.

It complains about alleged “weaponization” of the Justice Department and FBI against his client.  The opening paragraphs get straight to the point.

“We have been formally advised by prosecutors of the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida that Director Brennan is a target of grand jury investigation in the Miami Division which is examining the circumstances surrounding the production of the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment about Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election in the United States.”

Brennan’s lawyer went further, arguing his client’s “rights to fair and impartial treatment” by the criminal justice system are being compromised by media leaks. He also accuses the Trump Justice Department of venue shopping.  For example, a Florida jury and judge would likely be more favorable to the Trump Justice Department than a trial in a heavily democratic venue like Washington D.C.

These statements stand out in the “pot calling the kettle black” category.  It is well documented that former FBI Director James Comey, and presumably with a nod from former colleagues such as Brennan, used strategic media leaks to justify the 2017 Russia Collusion probe and to secure surveillance warrants for a Trump campaign aide.
