It is time for the Guantanamo Bay detainee operations to get the DOGE treatment?

DEEP DIVE

I found myself asking that question during this week’s reporting at Camp Justice, where the military commission trials are held for accused al Qaeda terrorists.

The ballpark figure for running the war on terror detainee detention camps and the military trials is about $455 million dollars a year and that is considered an outdated number on the low end.

Day 1 Guantanamo Bay January 18, 2025

While close to 800 detainees have passed through the detention camps, only 15 detainees remain.   Most are HVDs or High Value Detainees including the five 9/11 defendants.

You can do the math.  It comes out to about 30 million taxpayer dollars, per year, to house and prosecute each detainee.
